Dr. Sharad K. Soni
Dr. Sharad K. Soni is Assistant Professor at the Central Asian Studies Division, Centre for South, Central, Southeast Asian and Southwest Pacific Studies, School of International Studies, Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi (India). He has specialized in Mongolian and Chinese Central Asian Studies with particular focus on history, politics and international relations of Mongolia as well as Tibet and Inner Mongolia Autonomous Regions of China, apart from issues concerning Siberian Republics of Tuva and Buryatia. Dr. Soni has been a Visiting Faculty at the School of International Studies, Peking University, Beijing (2005-06) and Research Fellow, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Institute of Asian Studies, Kolkata (1999- 2005).
A recipient of ASIA Fellows Award (2005-06) from Ford Foundation funded Asian Scholarship Foundation, Bangkok (Thailand), he has extensively travelled in Mongolia and China on Field Study Trip. He is the First Indian Researcher to have visited Inner Mongolia University in Hohhot, China (2006). He has also visited Europe and USA in connection with his studies. He is actively associated with National/International Institutions dealing with Mongolian, Central Asian and Inner Asian Studies. He is the Founder Member of the Association of Asia Scholars, the network of ASIA Fellows of South Asia.
Apart from four books and three monographs to his credit he has also contributed about 30 research articles/chapters to various journals and edited volumes both in India and abroad. His major publications include Modern Mongolia: A Concise History (New Delhi, 2007) [Co-authored with Dr. Ts. Batbayar]; Mongolia-China Relations: Modern and Contemporary Times (New Delhi, 2006); Mongolia-Russia Relations: Kiakhta to Vladivostok (Delhi, 2002); Reign of Terror in Mongolia, 1920-1990 (New Delhi, 1992) [Co-authored with Dr. D. Dashpurev]. He is also the Assistant Editor of Himalayan and Central Asian Studies, a Quarterly Journal being published from New Delhi.
